Description: One of the most recognizable microphones, the Neumann U87 was
first introduced in 1967. It is a large diaphragm solid state/FET
microphone with three different directional patterns, a bass roll-off
filter and a 10 dB pad. It has a transformer based output. The
U87a began production in 1987 with a 10dB hotter ouput than the
previous version and a 3db improvement in S/N ratio.
Applications: The U87a can be a great vocal microphone, but it is not ideal
for every voice. The U87a is well-suited for use as a room mic
when used with a close mic on guitar cabinets. One of the more
obscure applications - if you ever have the need to record an
"Udu" which is a type of clay hand drum, this mic is a great choice.
* There is a third party retrofit available for the U87 called
the "Innertube" which replaces the solid state electronics with
a 6072 tube based circuit. |
