Description: The RCA 77DX is a multi-pattern (6) ribbon microphone and it
has a two position bass roll-off switch. The microphone uses a
very thin and fragile metal ribbon, suspended in a strong magnetic
field, to convert acoustical energy into electrical energy. The
different directional patterns are selected on the rear of the
mic with a screwdriver. This rotates a mechanical shutter which
is coupled to an acoustical 'labyrinth' , giving the microphone
it's different directional properties. Our 77DX has been refurbished
by Clarence Kane, a former RCA microphone engineer.
Applications: This is a microphone with a strong personality. Ribbon microphones
tend to accentuate the proximity effect so a sound that needs
to be fattened up could benefit from this mic. I've had good results
with this mic on female vocals, guitar cabinets, keyboards going
through guitar amps and clarinet. To my ears, this mic sounds
much better using a transformer coupled pre-amp. |
